Modern defence systems increasingly rely on advanced materials and technologies. Sheffield region companies provide a range of expertise from the supply of high quality metals, to know-how in materials technology and specialist defence manufacture.

For example, MTL Group in Rotherham are armour plate stockists and suppliers, and can provide everything from individual components for blast applications, up to fully-finished vehicle blast floors ready to fit. Products include; Ballistic Armour, Perforated Armour and Armoured Aluminum.

Other companies include; Rotherham-based Newburgh Engineering which provide contract manufacture of component parts and assemblies, including torpedo hulls, armour plating,  - tank turret components and armored vehicle components. Also Magnomatics Limited, who develop high torque density motors and generators for electric traction/propulsion and generation applications; and Chesterfield Special Cylinders who produce cylinders for aircraft applications and that are used in both military and commercial applications.
