Pulse Tidal Ltd
Pulse Tidal has taken major strides towards the development of new wave and tidal power technology. By using hydrofoils whichact just like a fish or a whale tail, Pulse are able to take energy from rivers and the tides with the same efficiency.
Pulse's approach to tidal stream power generation differs from that adopted by many competitors, who have settled around the "underwater windmill" horizontal axis design. Their approach takes account of the ways in which the tidal environment differs in some important ways from wind.
These include limited depth in some locations, resulting in the size of a vertically oriented rotor being constrained, which limits the power that a horizontal axis device can generate. The Pulse system's blades are horizontal rather than vertical, so the length is not limited by water depth - allowing much higher power; the non-rotating base is shaped to increase the tidal flow through the machine; and the design is fully submerged and allows for the blades to be folded down onto the base into a "survival position" to avoid rough weather or floating objects.
